Goners Forum Up

No idea, exactly, why it was down. But it would appear that at some point today the Goners Movie Fan Forum came back up again.

Ready To Polish?

Back in the middle of February, Joss said that his Goners script was “[r]eady to polish” once he had completed writing Wonder Woman.

More recently, just a few days ago, he intimated that he had finished the first draft of the Wonder Woman script.

So the question becomes: Does the Goners polishing begin now, or does the Wonder Woman script have to get through its final draft first?

Goners Forum Down

Here I go getting this site active again and the Goners Movie Fan Forum falls into a “server is too busy at the moment” tailspin.

More On Curious Gulag Goners

I once posted about use of the term “goners” to describe part of the Soviet gulag experience.

The other day I came across (via a WHEDONesque comment) another one, which I tracked down online.

Goners were extremely emaciated prisoners on the verge of death from starvation. Their presence constantly reminded prisoners of their potential fate if they failed to fulfill work quotas and thus were deprived of their full food rations.

Again, presumably irrelevant in terms of what Joss’ film will be about, but since I mentioned this once, I figured I’d toss out this other description of the term’s gulag use.

Blasphemy To Some?

At the end of the day, I think Goners might possibly benefit from being made after Wonder Woman rather than before it.

Presuming an Amazonian success for WW, there then would be a high level of anticipation to see what Joss did next. Otherwise, there’s a chance that Goners might be perceived (perhaps dismissively) merely as something he did while waiting for WW to get underway.

Strange Coincidence

A while back, I had a site where I wrote about another Joss Whedon film (I’ll leave you to remember or figure it out), and the name of this one simply was meant to be a play on the name of that one. But it occurs to me now that the question here — “What is Mia made of?” — turns out also to fit rather nicely with what Joss has said about Goners being “in the Buffy-mode of discovering strength”.

Very Ugly Side To Humanity

Having some futher speculations as to the “very ugly side to humanity” that’s supposed to be an element of the film, continuing from the notion that the “horrific” elements to the story might be more about the people than about the supernatural.

The idea being that perhaps it’s both, but in a way that still places the ultimate responsibility on people. It’s an idea I remember discussing back when everyone was frantically analyzing Twin Peaks.

What if there indeed are supernatural forces in the film, but they can’t actually harm or victimize anyone until we’ve done so ourselves? Say, some sort of violence or abuse, perhaps compounded by neglect? (”The world has forgotten about her.”)

What if the “very ugly side of humanity” has to inflict itself upon a person before any supernatural forces can do so?

It’s dangerous to speculate with so little information, if only because one risks becoming so wedded to an idea that one might not connect properly to whatever story the film eventually does tell, in whatever way it tells it.

But I’m somewhat fond of the idea of a horror tale in which any supernatural threat is incapable of acting against a potential victim until human beings themselves have victimized them first. It’s an idea that allows for otherworldly ugliness, but still places the ultimate responsibility firmly upon ourselves.
