Very Ugly Side To Humanity
Having some futher speculations as to the “very ugly side to humanity” that’s supposed to be an element of the film, continuing from the notion that the “horrific” elements to the story might be more about the people than about the supernatural.
The idea being that perhaps it’s both, but in a way that still places the ultimate responsibility on people. It’s an idea I remember discussing back when everyone was frantically analyzing Twin Peaks.
What if there indeed are supernatural forces in the film, but they can’t actually harm or victimize anyone until we’ve done so ourselves? Say, some sort of violence or abuse, perhaps compounded by neglect? (”The world has forgotten about her.”)
What if the “very ugly side of humanity” has to inflict itself upon a person before any supernatural forces can do so?
It’s dangerous to speculate with so little information, if only because one risks becoming so wedded to an idea that one might not connect properly to whatever story the film eventually does tell, in whatever way it tells it.
But I’m somewhat fond of the idea of a horror tale in which any supernatural threat is incapable of acting against a potential victim until human beings themselves have victimized them first. It’s an idea that allows for otherworldly ugliness, but still places the ultimate responsibility firmly upon ourselves.
